French Island is not attached to any shire and has almost no mainland services, properties are
solar or wind powered and collect their own rainwater.
There are a number of organic and biodynamic farms on the island, growing a range of produce. About
70% of the island is national park; it has over 600 species of plants, 230 birds, Australia's
largest koala population and a number of rare or endangered species (included the potoroo and Southern
Brown bandicoot).
Only 61km from Melbourne, Victoria's biggest island with less than 100 residents.
